Here's what I think: I don't think that animals have near the capacity for language that we do, and while they may understand a few sounds, they are nowhere near understanding a sentence.
I think our understanding of language has a large effect on how we think. If we can name something we gain the ability to easily think about it. For example, learning the vocabulary of math goes a long way towards understanding math. It allows us to manipulate complicated ideas with just a word. The square root of the hypotenuse of a triangle is equal to the sum of the squares of the legs. If you don' know the words you can't understand the idea. If you do know the words, you can take the idea further.
