Why can't they live as long as we do?

Why can't pets live as long as we do? Today is Alehe's 8th (gasp!) birthday. Her puppy raiser sends her a card every year. Today she sent it over e-mail, you can view it here. I started her on a senior diet dogfood just a few months ago. It was when one of the CCI trainers flew out here to visit with the two of us, to see how things were going. She handed me a packet of information and when I looked at the title, immediately tried to give it back (kiddingly, "I don't want this!") When I read over it that night, I cried. She will again be assessed by a CCI trainer in another two years, as dogs usually retire between eight and ten years of age. Some go on longer, while others go before. Come November, I will have had her six years. Time flies when you're having fun.
